How do heat pumps work

Heat pumps work by transferring heat between the outdoor air and your home through refrigerant lines and a compressor.

In winter, they extract heat from the outside air and bring it indoors to heat your living spaces. Conversely, during hot weather, the system reverses to expel heat from inside your home to keep it cool. This versatile design means you only need one system for both heating and cooling.

Heat pumps are renowned for their energy-saving capabilities. They can produce up to three times more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heat pumps can reduce your electricity consumption for heating by up to half.

Heat pumps are assessed for energy efficiency using two different rating systems: the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and the heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF).
